I’ve been thinking lately about what it means to truly love someone. I guess I believe it means to accept them as they are, flaws and all. There was a time I didn’t think that way. I thought that if you loved someone you helped them to be the best version of themselves possible. But, as I grow and change I realize that’s not love at all. If we love someone in the way that is most convenient for us, than we’re just loving a version of them that doesn’t exist yet.
Thoughts like, “if they would just stop asking me questions all the time.” or “if they could just… or do… or be…” Then, we’re not loving. I want to look at every person in my life as they are and say, “to me, you are perfect.” Yes, you will be healthier when you _______. But, it doesn’t change how I care for you. If you want to change, then that’s fine, but, until then, I’m here, just loving you.
with love as you are,
